Our adult students range in age from 15 to over 65. We have women and men from all areas of society. Student athleticism, experience and backgrounds all vary.
We all share a great respect for each other, the martial arts and have a desire to improve through hard word and persistence.
No matter where your journey in jujitsu starts, our community is there to support and guide you. Check out our Membership details and schedule!
Getting Started
Before anybody joins Kobukai Jujitsu, we have you watch a class, participate in another, and then decide. Jujitsu is not for everyone and we want to be sure you know what you are getting yourself into by joining! This way, we keep the pressure to join down to a bare minimum and you can make the decision at your pace.
If its not for you, we are happy to have met you and wish you the best of luck. We have had many students participate in a class, decide its not for them, and then weeks later come back after they thought about it and visited other dojos and realize it was for them after all!
What to Expect?
All new students begin at white belt, regardless of experience and ability. We assume you know nothing and start with basics. How fast you progress to the next belt (yellow) depends entirely on how fast or slow you are able to meet our standards of proficiency. For some, it could take 5 or 6 months with consistent class attendance, aptitude and training focus. For others, it could take a year.
Our philosophy is that a belt is nothing more than to hold your gi (uniform) together. Our goal is to be sure you know and can effectively perform the techniques at each level. Nobody is held back merely because it has not been long enough, and nobody is advanced because it has been “too long”.
Training Overview
Training consists of warm up (stretching and exercises to ready your body to move and be moved), ukemi (learning to fall and tumble), technique and skill training, and then active practice of what you learned and know.
There are over 200 techniques between white, yellow, blue, brown and black belt. Techniques vary from ground techniques (newaza), throw techniques (jujitsu and nage waza), joint locks and manipulation (aiki jitsu), weapon defense (club, knife and gun) and striking and escapes. Though class structure is relatively consistent, what each class focuses on will vary based on student level and needs.
Students train with the same belt level at times, but we also believe in mixing it up so that you get exposed to upper and lower belts. Even black belt students and instructors participate in training. Partner variety is a significant aspect of developing your ju jitsu and we are sure to mix it up as much as possible.
Attendance
Without training, there is no learning and no advancement. You get back what you put into it. Though not everyone can make class three times a week, attending at least 2 classes a week consistently is very important.
We understand that not everyone can arrange their busy schedules to always make class and the instructors also have families and professional careers that demand our attention and time. However, committing to at least 2 classes / week is important for training for both you and your fellow students.
